Description:Two etchings on wove paper attributed to James McNeil Whistler (American, 1834 – 1903) depicting Venetian scenes ca. 1890’s as follows: The first etching depicting a Venetian canal with bridge in the center ground flanked by buildings, with ideograph signature on the lower left in the plate and also in the plate on the lower right “Venize”. Titled on the margin in pencil “Venise – Rio San Giorgio” on the lower left and signed illegibly on the lower right also in pencil. On the reverse of the frame “Original Etching by Whistler 1896”. The plate size is 4 ˝” x 3”, framed overall 9” x 7”. The second etching depicting a Palazzo on waterway in the background and two gondolas in the center ground. Titled in the plate “Palazzo Dario … “ on the lower left and an unidentified ideograph on the lower right. Titled in pencil in the margin “Venise – Palazzo Dario A…. 9/30” and signed on the lower right also in pencil. The plate size is 5” x 3 ˝”, framed overall 9 ˝” x 7”. On the reverse on the frame “Original Etching by Whistler 1896”. Neither etching is in the artist’s Catalog Raisonne. Both framed in carved gilt wood frames with gold filet.
